Weave a basket, craft a centerpiece, build a chair, and unleash your creativity with a series of arts and crafts programs offered in November at Adkins Arboretum.
On Sat., Nov. 1, join Chanticleer Garden horticulturist and craftsman Dan Benarcik from 10 a.m. to noon to build your own Wave Hill chair. Based on a 1918 design by acclaimed Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld and modified in the 1960s, the chair was popularized at the garden at Wave Hill in the Bronx. This timeless and comfortable chair is suitable for any garden setting. All materials are provided, and no carpentry skills are needed. The session is $195 for members and $220 for non-members, a significant discount from the retail price of the chair.
In the Sumac Leaf Glass Plate Workshop on Wed., Nov. 12, Karen Montgomery of The Clay Bakers will lead participants in creating a stylized glass plate with a sumac leaf design in fall colors. Score and break glass to build your design, and let The Clay Bakers fire and finish your piece. Completed plates will be ready for pick-up the week after the class. The program meets from 1 to 3 p.m. and is $45 for members, $50 for non-members.
In Introduction to Color Pencil, a two-day workshop led by botanical artist Lee D’Zmura, participants will learn basic color pencil techniques, including hue, value, intensity, sketching, transfer and color application. The sessions meet from 9:30 to 3 p.m. on Fridays, Nov. 14 and 21. The program fee is $125 for members and $150 for non-members.
Lee Zimmerman Nelson has been making and exhibiting award-winning basketry for more than thirty years. On Thurs., Nov. 20, join Nelson to make a one-of-a-kind oval basket perfect for holiday arrangements. Using vines and natural hand-dyed rattan, you’ll produce a beautiful and functional piece and learn basic skills as you work. All skill levels are welcome. The program meets from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is $45 for members, $55 for non-members.
Join floral designer and Arboretum docent Nancy Beatty for a Thanksgiving Centerpiece Workshop on Sat., Nov. 22 to create an autumn centerpiece for your Thanksgiving table. Under Beatty’s guidance, you will use flora, pods, berries, leaves and a few store-bought additions to craft a beautiful seasonal arrangement. The program meets from 10 a.m. to noon and is $35 for members, $45 for non-members.
