The Lesole Dance Project – a performance of contemporary-modern and Afro-Fusion dance – performed this afternoon at Tilghman Island Elementary School. With hands clapping and feet stomping, Tilghman students heard traditional African percussion and sound. They experienced original choreography and performance based on centuries of traditional music and story-telling. Students felt the power of history communicated through physical expressions of music, dance and stories. Very curious about life in South Africa, the students asked the performers dozens of questions about everything from wild animals to hunting, life and culture.
Lesole’s Dance Project (LDP) is a company of six dancers, and a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. The company has performed nationally at the National Museum of African Art in Philadelphia, Miami International Book Fair, Cincinnati Play House in Ohio, Michigan State University, and The Harris Theater-Dance Africa Chicago and in the Washington DC area at Dance Africa DC-Dance Place, University of Maryland, The Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, and the townships of Sebokeng, South Africa.
With a mission to promote South African arts, collaborate with contemporary artists, create original dance and music performances and encourage artistic potential, Lesole Dance Project brings fun and excitement to their public performances. The performers at Tilghman today included Lesole Z. Maine, Moeketsi M. Segojane and Thia Homer.
The performance was made possible through the Talbot County Arts Council and Tilghman Arts and Education Fund/Carpe Diem Arts.
