Bob Luff, President of Easton Amateur Radio Club will be the Brown Bag Speaker at St. Michaels Library on Monday Jan. 6, 2014 at noon.
Before TV, internet, twitter, Facebook, and cellphones amateur radio enthusiasts connected around the Globe by their radio equipment… just to talk… or to help relay emergency communications from earthquake or other disasters.
Today there are more than 2 million ham radio operators worldwide. Today’s radio equipment is ready-built, small, affordable, and license requirements have been streamlined to not be a barrier to anyone from 8 to 80+. It’s a wonderful hobby the whole family can enjoy. It’s educational, has contests, and has a practical application when the lights go off… and all other forms of communications fail.
The presentation will include a live demonstration of amateur radio and an illustrated discussion of this multifaceted hobby which includes voice, text, or picture communications across town or Globe from home or car, connecting to the Space Lab, use of amateur satellites, bouncing signals off the Moon, and so much more. Bob is the former chief engineer of NBC Network. He is also the Emergency Communications Director for our four county Eastern Shore area.
The Friends of the Library are sponsors of the speaker series and everyone is invited to bring lunch and enjoy coffee and dessert provided by the library.
All library programs are free and open to the public.
