A recent Letter to the Editor has called attention to our use of herbicides and pesticides. A growing body of scientific evidence gathered from epidemiologic studies is showing that our “accepted level” of contamination does not account for the cumulative effect these chemicals have on our heath. Physician Diane Lewis writes in the New York Times that “many chemicals that we use very casually on our lawns cause long-term health problems in ways that have only recently been understood.”

In the “60’s, while attending med school, my OB/Gyn professor developed aplastic anemia and died rather suddenly. The only significant history we could come up with was his rather frequent aggressive use of pesticide sprays (without a mask) on his lawn and garden. Nothing was ever substantiated in that regard, but since then many of the products available at that time have been removed from the market. We use pesticides very, very sparingly in this family…
