Jennifer Wagner beat out hundreds of applicants for the new, original, permanent work of art project for the Outdoor Classroom Mosaic Mural at Brookland Middle School located on Michigan Avenue, N.E., Washington, DC 20032 in the Brookland Community Ward 5. Thousands of artists were invited to send in their professional qualifications along with design ideas to the Department of General Services who is the government organization charged with site-specific capital improvements for the location.
The Department of General Services has a mission to elevate the quality of life for the District with superior construction, first-rate maintenance and expert real estate management. “By building and maintaining safe and green state-of-the-art facilities which foster economic growth and elevate educational environments, our trusted and skillful employees create modern and vibrant communities across all of the District of Columbia.”
The semi-finalists were brought to DC for in-person interviews and Jennifer received the announcement of her win August 7th, 2014. The selection is a significant addition to her ten year career with community art installations. Wagner is no stranger to community projects as you may have seen her murals at the YMCA of the Chesapeake in Cambridge MD, Denton MD, Easton MD and St. Michaels MD. As well as 450 Race St. Mural, Cambridge, MD, Ava’s Pizzeria &Wine Bar Mural, 409 Talbot St, St Michaels, MD, Antiochian Village Mural, Ligonier PA and many more.
Wagner received the City Beautification Award from Cambridge, Maryland mayor Victoria Jackson-Stanley for the 450 Race St. mural in 2008. What’s Up? Eastern Shore named Wagner one of the Top 12 People to Watch for 2009. In 2010, her former Gallery 26, won Most Unique Gifts in What’s Up? Eastern Shore’s reader’s poll and she was named Best Artist of the Upper Shore by Maryland Life Magazine and cover of the March 2011 issue. “My deep community roots will be effective in making the Outdoor Classroom Mosaic Mural at Brookland Middle School a true, interactive community project. Wagner commences the outdoor classroom mural November 1st intending completion and installation in March of 2015.
