It is duly noted by the Spy that the Atlantic magazine has, as one of its major articles for their September edition, a very thoughtful piece by author Clint Smith on taking his children to visit the Frederick Douglass statue in Easton recently.

Carol Voyles says
We aren’t likely to see a more powerful and meaningful description of Frederick Douglass’ experiences here and how they relate to our reality today.
Thank you for sharing this.
Douglas Firth says
Thank you for this. Gives one a different and refreshing perspective on a very difficult subject to many people. While I had already made up my mind on what to do with the Talbot Boys statue this just enforces what the right thing is to do. It cannot continue to stay next to Mr. Douglass.
Dan Watson says
Nice article. My only comment is that while I do see Trump/Pence flags often enough (too often, in fact) I don’t know that I’ve ever seen an actual Confederate flag here, other than as a decal on a truck, or the one in bronze furled in front of the Courthouse.
Stephen Schaare says
If Mr. Smith can provide the street address of where he saw the confederate flag, I will make every effort to see the residents have a full understanding of what the flag represents. This could be difficult, as both the rebel flag and the Trump/Pence placards enjoy protection as freedom of speech under the first amendment.
Christine Murray says
I do hope the country council will do the right thing and vote to remove this statue.
Linda Baker says
I have to ask why the author was disdained to see a Trump flag flying, was he also upset about the American Flag flying? Was he comparing Trump to Lee? If so, he needs to do more research in all avenues of history, not just the one side. He needs to open his mind to different news forums. If he thinks desecrating anything, whether it be a monument, war memorials, US Flag, etc then he clearly doesn’t understand our history. I found the article very biased.
