Tilghman Watermen’s Museum speaker series

On Saturday, January 25, at 1:00 PM, the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum Speaker Series will host a Panel of Tilghman Watermen at the Tilghman Island Volunteer Fire Department, 5979 Tilghman Island Road.  

The event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted. 

The Watermen will share their experiences of working on the water, including their history, daily challenges, and what keeps them coming back to this extremely difficult job year after year.

Committed to celebrating, documenting, preserving, and sharing the history, traditions, heritage, and culture of Tilghman’s Island, the Tilghman Watermen’s Museum hosts an exceptional collection of local artists such as Bill Cummings, Colleen Sadler, Marc Castelli, and Nancy Tankersley. The museum contains a treasure trove of artifacts, oral histories, and boat models.

New sounds at Delmarva Public Media

Delmarva Public Media is restyling two of its three stations to create separate station identities offering contemporary listeners distinct audio experiences.

Schedule adjustments include: 

  • WSDL 90.7 has more news and talk in the mornings following NPR Morning Edition. In the afternoons and evenings, the station features adult album alternative (AAA) music programs.
  • WESM 91.3 continues to air NPR programs and jazz, but is also leaning into its Black radio station roots adding R&B, blues, funk, soul and urban alternative.

Delmarva Public Media’s third station, WSCL 89.5, will retain its popular classical 24/7 format.

 “Three public radio stations in a market our size is unique and a testament to the Delmarva region. Each station can present its own identity and unique content for different audiences.” said Judy Diaz, Delmarva Public Media’s general manager. 

WSDL 90.7

Since 2020 WSDL 90.7 has been mainly a repeater of WESM 91.3. The program changes give the station its own identity focused on news and talk and a wider variety of adult album alternative (AAA) music. “The ‘D’ in WSDL now stands for discourse, dialogue and music discovery.” said Bryan Russo, Delmarva Public Media chief content officer. New schedule highlights include:

  • More news and talk shows follow NPR Morning Edition on weekday mornings. This creates a larger news block with news magazines such as Think, On the Media, Hidden Brain, TED Radio Hour and many more.
  • AAA music programs bookend NPR All Things Considered on weekday afternoons built largely around nationally syndicated shows like Strange Currency and Americanarama, which has aired on WSDL since 2023 on Sunday evenings.
  • The “Three O’Clock Throwback” hour features carefully curated programs (The Atomic Radio Hour with Mister 1960, Dollar Country and Stuck in the Psychedelic Era) focusing on sounds and songs from a different time and will explore more niche genres like classic country, western swing, and the “Midcentury Museum of American Music” from the 1950s and 60’s.

These changes, coupled with the existing AAA music featured on World Café and XPoNential Radio give WSDL its own unique sound. 

WESM 91.3

WESM is launching a new weekday afternoon program lineup spearheaded by four nationally syndicated shows produced at Historic Black College/Universities (HBCU) stations across the country and distributed by the African American Public Radio Consortium. These changes help the station honor its history, while putting it in a position to pivot into the future with the addition of shows that feature jazz, soul, gospel, blues and urban alternative — content that is helping to shape the sound of HBCU public radio stations across the nation today. New schedule highlights include:

  • Monday afternoon is all jazz with New Urban Jazz Lounge and Notes from the Jazz Underground with Paul Abella.
  • It’s Funky Tuesday afternoons with Catch the Flo and Tonic: The Funky Groove Show.
  • On Wednesday tune in to Rhythm Lab Radio as DJ Tarik Moody redefines the urban sound with a mix of jazz, hip-hop, soul and more.
  • Thursdays feature Return to the Source with traditional jazz music.
  • Friday afternoons include a deep dive into contemporary jazz on The Get Down with Ragan Whiteside and a musical journey through the R&B and Gospel on Soulsations with Carla Eckels.

Free guided birding tours offered at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge

Get outside this winter and spring by participating in a free guided birding tour at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge (NWR).  You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy learning about and identifying the many species of birds that inhabit the refuge. Throughout the winter, waterfowl and raptors, including bald eagles, are plentiful, while spring brings in migratory warblers and shorebirds. Guided birding tours are scheduled for Sundays, January 19, January 26, February 9, February 16, March 9, March 23, and April 13, Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Participants meet at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 8:00 a.m. for each tour, which may last 3 to 4 hours.  The birding party typically tours via personal vehicle, stopping at various points around the refuge’s Wildlife Drive. Binoculars and field guides are recommended.  There is no fee or advanced registration for these tours.  For further information, please call the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center at 410-228-2677 or visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/Blackwater.

Tred Avon Players opens 44th season with PLAZA SUITE

Tred Avon Players is thrilled to kick off its 2025 season with Neil Simon’s classic comedy, PLAZA SUITE. Directed by Ed Langrell, Angel Perez and Maureen Curtin, the production runs from February 13-23, 2025 at the Oxford Community Center. Set in the luxurious Suite 719 of New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel, PLAZA SUITE unfolds across three acts, each featuring a different couple navigating the complexities of love, life, and relationships.

In the first act, Karen and Sam, a long-married couple, revisit the suite where they spent their honeymoon, only to find their relationship may be on the rocks. Act two follows Muriel and Jesse, former high school sweethearts who reconnect in Suite 719, seemingly rekindling old flames. The final act introduces Norma and Roy, frazzled parents of the bride, desperately trying to coax their daughter out of the bathroom on her wedding day. Each story delivers its own unique blend of humor, heartache, and surprising revelations about love, reminding audiences of the unpredictable nature of relationships.

The talented cast includes new and returning actors to the TAP stage: Melissa Barcomb-Doyle (Karen Nash), Dean Goodwin (Sam Nash), Joseph Spain IV (Bellhop/Borden Eisler), Michelle Spain (Waiter), Leigh Marquess (Jean McCormack), Charles Ulveling (Jessie Kiplinger), Mary Ann Emerson (Muriel Tate), Susan Patterson (Norma Hubley), Brian McGunigle (Roy Hubley) and Jackie Royer (Mimsey Hubley).

Anthony P. Kern selected as Qlarant Board Chair

Qlarant Inc., a health care data science and technology firm headquartered in Easton Md., has selected Anthony “Tony” P. Kern as its new Board Chair. Mr. Kern joined Qlarant as a Board Member in January of 2019 and became Vice Chair in May of 2021. He also has served Qlarant as the Chair of the finance committee and served on the governance committee.

Mr. Kern begins his tenure following the retirement of John H. Murray, Esq. who was Board Chair for the last three years.  “I am honored to be named the next Chair of Qlarant,” said Kern. “I want to thank John Murray for his good advice and steady hand over these last several years. I look forward to continuing work to safeguard and improve the country’s health care system and expand Qlarant’s offerings across a broad range of clients and industries.”

Tony Kern retired as Senior Managing Partner with the global accounting and consulting firm Deloitte & Touche. His experience encompasses a broad range of industries with a concentration in technology, media, telecommunications, energy, and financial services. Throughout his career, Mr. Kern has provided counsel on a wide range of topics including management advice, business strategy, planning, business development, innovation and disruption strategies, corporate finance and re-structuring, and customer experience and retention. He also provides insight into operational optimization, corporate governance and ethics, board of directors’ guidance, and merger and acquisition planning and integration.

Tony Kern also served as U.S. Deputy Managing Partner of the firm’s Technology, Media, and Telecoms practice. He was the Global Managing Partner of Innovation and the Managing Partner of Deloitte’s Fast 50 program (recognizing the fastest growing companies in America). Prior to joining Deloitte & Touche, Kern was an Industry Global Managing Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers, and before that, a Regional Managing Partner at Arthur Andersen.

“I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to manage consulting practices from $20 million to $1.45 billion in revenue,” Kern continued. “I hope that experience will continue to be useful as Qlarant grows. At the end of the day, I maintain a consultative approach to growing companies which can mean a lot of things—but primarily it means LISTEN MORE. It’s critically important to listen to our people, our clients, and the marketplace in order to meet the goals we have set for ourselves over the next few years.”

He has made legacy predictions and forecasts regarding wireless networks, internet-speed and security, as well as the impact of social media on society, news, and the entertainment industry. Tony is recognized as an expert by U.S. Federal Courts in matters of business management, transactions, and corporate finance. He’s been a frequent speaker at industry gatherings and has been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal, National Public Radio, CNBC, MSNBC, The

New York Times, Dow Jones News-Wire, Fortune Magazine, and other media outlets.

Kern has mentored and counseled entrepreneurs, senior executives, and managers in a wide range of mature businesses and start-ups. He has successfully started and sold several companies in the communications, technology, and energy industries. He serves on several boards, including Qlarant, Inc., the Easton Economic Development Corporation, as President of the Board at the Eastern Shore Entrepreneurship Center, Vice President of the Board for Waterfowl Festival, Inc., and Chair of the Talbot County Ethics Commission.

Glenn Pearson (piano and vocals) and Jeff Cooper (bass) will present popular swing and jazz standards, and favorite show tunes.  The two have been friends and professional musicians for over 40 years. After meeting in high school they formed a band and later attended Peabody Conservatory. Jeff focused on musical theater while Glenn concentrated on piano performance. Their true passion is engaging audiences with their talent, wit, and style, and sharing their love for iconic American music. Performance highlights include the Kennedy Center, National and Ford’s theaters, Wolf Trap, the Smithsonian, and on Broadway. Glenn has also performed at the White House for many Presidents over the past four decades, as well as countless embassies, galleries and museums. 

Carpe Diem Arts is pleased to join forces again with the Talbot County Senior Center to present the popular free lunch-time concert series at Brookletts Place in Easton (400 Brookletts Ave.)

Improv Easton invites the community to try improv with Improv for All!

Talbot County’s favorite (and only!) improv comedy troupe, Improv Easton, is excited to invite the community to start their 2025 journey by daring to try something new. Mark your calendars to attend Improv for All! on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, at 40 S. Harrison Street in Easton.

This free event is open to all to drop in and try improv games and exercises–no prior comedy or theater experience is required. The workshop is designed for individuals who are new to improv. It’s a chance to meet new people, share some laughs, and see what improvisational comedy is all about in a low-pressure, supportive, and relaxed setting. Grace Street becomes Talbot County ‘safe station’ for people needing treatment

Peers provide 24-hour support for substance use services

Grace Street, a recovery community organization in Easton, recently received funding to expand hours for 24/7, no-barrier access for people wanting treatment. 

Grace Street received a State Opioid Response (SOR) grant from the Maryland Department of Health’s Behavioral Health Administration that supports operating 24/7 as the Talbot County Safe Station. Safe stations are intended as a no-barrier, ease-of-access safe place for people to seek help for addiction. 

A Grace Street peer is available 24 hours each day to connect people with treatment or other resources. Peers are people with lived experience; peer support is an evidence-based practice that has become an increasingly integral part of addiction recovery. Grace Street is located at 8262 Ocean Gateway, Suite 1 in Easton. Peers are available at 443-439-1820.

“People in rural areas historically have a hard time gaining access to treatment for a variety of reasons,” said Kelley Callaghan, founder of Grace Street. “So often when people finally get to a place of wanting help, they can’t access treatment. We hope to help change that.”

Talbot County’s safe station program began in 2018 as a collaboration among county officials and agencies. The program was modeled after a similar initiative that started in Anne Arundel County firehouses in 2017. Without paid fire department staff, the local program began at the St. Michaels Police Department and at the Talbot County Department of Emergency Services in Easton.

Grace Street recently received funding from Talbot County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) that allowed for the purchase of a vehicle. The vehicle allows Grace Street peers to take people to treatment, and to appointments for medications for opioid use disorder and other necessary services. This ensure that lack of transportation never prevents anyone from accessing supports. 

“Talbot County is proud to support Grace Street in expanding safe station access and helping people get to treatment,” said Chuck Callahan, Talbot County Council President. “With 24/7 peer support and a new vehicle funded by the county’s ARPA funds, Grace Street is making it easier for people to find help when they need it most. This is an important step forward in supporting the recovery community.”

Grace Street opened in August 2023 and offers a non-clinical, peer-led space for anyone affected by substance use. Since it opened, Grace Street peers have directly connected more than 120 people to inpatient treatment. 

The Grace Street Safe Station program is part of an Eastern Shore collaborative via Mid Shore Behavioral Health that includes additional SOR-funded safe stations in Caroline, Wicomico and Worcester counties.

As an RCO, Grace Street provides peer-based and other recovery support services; operates the region’s only harm reduction vending machine and distribution boxes that includes Narcan, Fentanyl and Xylazine test strips; offers free harm reduction materials and services, including wound care; conducts weekly street outreach; provides resource connection and supports; provides life skills and workforce development, including peer recovery support training for certification; hosts support groups and fosters recovery-focused community education. 

Grace Street serves people across the Mid-Shore. Referrals are not necessary, and services are free. 

Grace Street is a component fund of Chesapeake Charities, a community foundation based in Stevensville. Donations are tax deductible and can be made online at GraceStreetRecovery.org.

Lyon Rum celebrates new event space with live jazz and cocktails

Windon Distilling Co. is probably best known for their award-winning spirit line, Lyon Rum. Having just finished their 11th year of production, the distillery is elated to be opening their new event space, Golden Hour, next to their staple tasting room in Saint Michaels, Maryland. To celebrate its opening, they welcome local jazz musician Stephen Philip Harvey and his chordless-trio, SPH+2, for a live performance in this new intimate space. The concert is set for Friday, January 17, 2025. Doors open at 5pm with a cocktail hour, and music starts at 6pm. Tickets are $30 and available via Eventbrite. It’s a rare opportunity to be able to play jazz in Saint Michaels, especially in such a beautifully designed space.” His trio, SPH+2, will be performing well-known jazz standards and music from their debut album, Library Card (2024). This collection of pieces boasts original, straight-ahead jazz compositions inspired by children’s book played in an intimate format.

TAP casting call: The Man From Earth

Tred Avon Players (TAP) invites actors of all experience levels to audition for THE MAN FROM EARTH, a thought-provoking drama by Richard Schenkman. Based on the book by Jerome Bixby and directed by Cecile Storm, the production will run for seven performances from April 17–27, 2025, at the Oxford Community Center.

PLAY SUMMARY
After history professor John Oldman unexpectedly resigns from the University, his startled colleagues impulsively invite themselves to his home, pressing him for an explanation. But they’re shocked to hear his reason for premature retirement: John claims he must move on because he is immortal, and cannot stay in one place for more than ten years without his secret being discovered. Tempers rise and emotions flow as John’s fellow professors attempt to poke holes in his story, but it soon becomes clear that his tale is as impossible to disprove as it is to verify. What starts out as a friendly gathering soon builds to an unexpected and shattering climax. Acclaimed science fiction writer Jerome Bixby, writer of the original ‘Star Trek’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’, originally conceived this story back in the early 1960’s. It would become his last great work.

 

CASTING

TAP will be casting 10 roles. All ages, genders, ethnicities, body types, abilities, and skill levels are welcome to audition and will be considered for roles.

  • John: A history professor who resigns from his job to move to a new home. He claims to be immortal and must move every ten years to avoid being discovered.
  • Harry: A biology professor.
  • Edith: An art history professor.
