Orioles Opening Day was yesterday March 28, 2024 and they are going to fun to watch again this year!! Royal Oak, Maryland’s Elizabeth Swaine participated in the Orioles Fantasy Camp in Sarasota, Florida in February of 1992 and the Camp participants were invited to be in the Orioles Opening Day parade that year. It was a special Opening Day on April 6, 1992, because that was the year the new Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore, Maryland, opened! Do you remember the spring of 1977 when many of the waterfront docks in Talbot County looked like this? During the winter of 1977, the ice was so thick and constant that our tidal water level changes pushed the pilings up! It’s called ice-jacking dock damage! This Talbot Historical Society Charles C. Harris Collection photo is of a 1965 volunteer trash cleanup effort somewhere in Talbot County. C. C. Harris lived near Royal Oak so it’s possibly in that area. The only person identified is 3rd from the right Ed Kilmon. Can you identify the other volunteers in this group?

This is a photo of the beautiful Log canoe “Nannie” in front of the Altvater home in Tunis Mills with the Tunis Mills wooden bridge in the background. circa 1905-1910. The tall mast atop the log canoe’s rear sail actually belongs to a Bugeye/Schooner docked at the Tunis Mills bridge. The “Nannie belonged to Charles Decker Altvater. Charles was a carpenter with plenty of work in St. Michaels. Like many others in this period, Charles converted the “Nannie” to power and died in 1915.

A large majority of the Chesapeake Bay workboats in the late 1800s and early 1900s were sailing log canoes. In the early 1900’s, many like my grandfather Gus Mielke’s were converted to power. In so doing, the bow and stern were reversed. Small cuddy cabins were also added. The sheer, unmatched, majestic beauty of a log canoe is never more evident than in this example. What lines! No wonder there is an undying interest in log canoes and their competitive racing!

You can clearly see parts of the original 1915 Memorial Hospital at Easton in this Talbot Historical Society Laird Wise Collection photo! The center wing addition that is in the foreground was dedicated in 1955! More additions that totally concealed the original hospital building were made in 1985. Enjoy this beautiful snow and ice image of Bellevue, Maryland’s Marina in 1979! There were many trucks there to pick up the day’s oyster harvest! We had so much ice on our Talbot County rivers in the 1970’s! A special thanks to Elizabeth Swaine for sharing her many wonderful family photos with the Talbot Historical Society, including this one of Ice Boats getting for a race on the frozen Miles River in 1977. Could these two C&P Telephone operators c 1960s be sisters? Maybe you can identify the women? The Talbot Historical Society Laird Wise Collection database information identifies this picture as a C&P Telephone Advertisement photo. C&P Telephone was founded in 1883 and by 1984, the C&P Telephone Companies became part of Bell Atlantic.

This amazing 1898 William B. Shannahan Collection photo is featured on page 130 of Norman Harrington’s book “ Easton Album” 1986. Mr. Harrington captioned this picture as the “ BC&A train after breaking through the snow drifts just east of Easton during the blizzard of 1898”! William B. Shannahan was 20 years old at the time he took this picture ! For someone so young he did a great job of recording Talbot County’s Railroad era of the past! A special thanks again to Bob Shannahan for sharing his grandfather’s negatives with the Talbot Historical Society!

Enjoy this Talbot Historical Society Found in Collections winter scene photo of the St. Michael’s Harbor looking toward Navy Point! In the 1800’s the log canoe was the dominant work boat in Talbot County, Maryland! Settlers adopted log canoes from the Indian watercraft they observed effectively working our waterways. Over time they were built from one to seven logs and were twelve to forty feet long. Log canoes were rigged with sails and were the craft most used for oyster tonging. Facts: “ Chesapeake Bay Sailing Craft” by M. V. Brewington 1966.
