Building African American Mind (BAAM) is only 15-year-old, yet it has done much since its inception and partnership with the Talbot County Public School System. Initially, the program’s objectives were to identify at-risk African American males in first through fifth grades, providing them with after school tutoring services. What started as a service to 10 boys, has grown to over 80 and now encompasses both elementary and middle school. Besides education, the program also includes camping trips, sporting events, park and museum tours, etc.
In 2016 BAAM purchased a building and parking lot at 31 Jowite Street in Easton to better serve the youth. On December 14, 2019, the new BAAM Athletic Center officially opened, offering a multipurpose facility with a gym, classrooms, community event room, and office space. Boyd Rutherford, Lt. Governor of Maryland, visited the site a few days prior to the opening.
In this video, Derrick Daly, founder of BAAM, discusses how the addition of this space benefits the community and how it will attract middle and high school students through a combination of athletics and academics.
The video is approximately three minutes in length. For more information about BAAM, please go
