Harold Baines, former Major League Baseball star and St. Michaels native, will appear again this year at the Christmas in St. Michaels’ Santa’s Wonderland event for children 3 -11 on Sat., Dec. 13, at the St. Michaels School Campus. He will sign baseball cards, baseballs, and photos and will pose for photos with his young fans.
Baines ended his 22-year playing career in 2001, having been drafted out of St. Michaels High School by the Chicago White Sox in 1977 as the No. 1 draft pick in the country. He played for the Baltimore Orioles several times between 1993 and 2000 and has been inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame. After retiring from playing, Harold has continued in professional baseball for 12 years as a coach with the Chicago White Sox in several different positions and is currently the assistant hitting coach. He has been volunteering his time at the Santa’s Wonderland event for more than 11 years.
Santa’s Wonderland also includes entertaining games and prizes, Meet Santa and Mrs. Claus, Fun Crafts, Secret Shop and Wrap, Hot Dog Lunch, Bake Sale and Door Prizes. $2.00 entry fee for all children
Leslye Mosier and Marilyn Nace, co-chairs of the event, suggest that parents bring their children to Santa’s Wonderland right after the Talbot Street parade. “Because there are so many events on Sat., we open Santa’s Wonderland following the parade, and it closes at 2:30—so it’s a good idea to come as soon as the parade is over,” Mosier says.
All funds raised by Christmas in St. Michaels go to the following local non-profit organizations: CarePacks of Talbot County-St. Michaels and Tilghman, Character Counts Mid Shore, Inc., Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, Classic Motor Museum of St. Michaels., Critchlow Adkins Children’s Centers – St. Michaels Site, Drew Landis Memorial Fireworks, Imagination Library-Bay Hundred, Phillips Wharf Environmental Center, Pickering Creek Audubon Center, St. Michaels After School Help(SMASH), St. Michaels Community Center, St. Michaels Community Food Pantry, St. Michaels High School After Prom, St. Michaels Fire Department, St. Michaels Little League, Talbot Humane-Bay Hundred, Talbot Partnership-Bay Hundred, Tilghman Area Youth Association, and Tilghman Watermen’s Association.
Christmas in St. Michaels will take place this year on December 12, 13, and 14. It will include a Holiday Gala, a Christmas parade, Tour of Homes, Breakfast with Santa, Santa’s Wonderland, Gingerbread House Display, and the Marketplace for hand-crafted gifts, a Celebration of Choirs, and many other holiday festivities.
