The advertisement reads, “Be the Change . . . One peaceful heart at a time”, and we, having found our way to a yoga class at Evergreen and completed a series of practices, are now lying on the polished bamboo floor, vaulted ceiling above, as light streams in through a wall of windows overlooking a branch of the Tred Avon River. The teacher’s voice rings clear in the stillness, “Pay attention to your breath, coming in and going out. Allow yourself to receive support from the earth, eyes softly closed, no work to do, blue sky above. Just… let… go.”
The room fills with a unified inspiration, followed by a long, slow exhalation. And we are changed. But we not only feel calm and peaceful, studies have shown areas of the brain important for learning and memory and associated with self-awareness, compassion, and introspection are enhanced through yoga and other meditative practices.
Evergreen, a peaceful four-acre waterfront sanctuary located at Easton Point on Port Street, offers supportive and uniquely integrated programs and services for the health and well-being of body, mind, spirit, and the earth. The newly launched “just breath…” series will provide a welcome mid-week respite on Wednesday evenings of each month, from 5:30-6:30 pm, and a great opportunity to meet Evergreen Practitioners and Instructors at low cost or no charge offerings. These will include monthly Acupuncture Clinics and Yoga Enrichment Classes, as well as introductions to upcoming classes and workshops such as Tai Chi, Stress Management, Classical Yoga, Couples Yoga, Chair Yoga, Reiki, Creative and Expressive Arts. Practitioners will lead discussions on healing modalities, sharing tools and techniques to move us toward an increased sense of vitality while offering encouragement to feel good mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
Membership supports the continuance of the non-profit Evergreen mission to affect peace in our communities and the world, beginning with ourselves, and helps to ensure the stewardship of beautiful waterfront open space in the heart of Easton. However, participation in programs and access to wellness services is open and available to everyone.
