Too many musical choices this weekend ! Whether you’re hankering for some down and dirty New Orleans blues, melodic folk/rock, or in the mood for classical music performed by young stars of chamber music, your best bet is downtown Easton. We are very sorry that the Willy Porter show set for Friday at the Avalon is sold out – but there’s a good reason for that. Grab your tickets way in advance the next time he’s in town.
The Chamber Music Competition, sponsored biennially by Chesapeake Chamber Music starts 1:00 p.m Saturday at the Avalon Theatre. There are five finalists: Axiom Brass; Calidore Quartet; Sun-Silverstein-Lyon Trio; Russian Trio; and Quartet LaMi, all competing for the Gold Medal prize of $10,000 and the Silver Medal prize of $5,000. Three of the ensembles are also playing shows on Sunday. See below for more details.
Those New Orleans blues will be played by The Joe Krown Trio at the NightCat Saturday night. The band features Joe on the Hammond B-3, Walter Wolfman Washington (guitar & vocals), and Russell Batiste (drums & background vocals); a veritable Who’s Who of all-star New Orleans musicians. And fyi – you might want to pick up tickets for Pegi Young & the Survivors, playing there Monday. She is Neil Young’s wife, back up singer, and folk/rocker in her own right.
Why not take the family out Saturday morning for some exercise and find out who those birds are singing in your back yard at the Pickering Creek Bird Walk n’ Talk Series. Their staff will introduce beginning birders of all ages to the birds found along the Delmarva Peninsula. After all, if you’re going to concerts Saturday afternoon, evening , possibly Sunday…Monday, you’ll need some fresh air.
