This Spy is taking full advantage of the almost overwhelming array of musical events presented this week and next in our section of the Delmarva Peninsula, especially the classical Chesapeake Chamber Music and National Music Festivals. Is there such a thing as too much music ?
One of the highlights of the Chesapeake Chamber series may be the Friday, June 8 “Magnificent Mendelssohn” concert at the Avalon, as the festival’s Artistic Director, Marcy Rosen, is a founding member of the world-renowned Mendelssohn String Quartet. We’re betting Rosen knows a thing or two about performing his oeuvre.
Saturday, we’ll leave the planning to you, but if you’re a fan of “good old country” music, get tickets for Sunday night’s Elizabeth Cook show at the NightCat. As it says on the website, her background reads like a country song. Cook is the youngest of 11, and her father, “.. learned to play upright bass in a Georgia prison band while serving 11 years for running moonshine. Her mother, a singer and mandolin player from the hills of West Virginia, wrote her daughter’s first songs, including “Does My Daddy Love The Bottle More Than He Loves Me,” and had Elizabeth singing on stage at 4 years old. ” Guess she didn’t have any choice in her career.
Looking ahead – Tuesday evening the Maritime Museum will be hosting a free concert with the Maryland Army National Guard Band. Take the family and have a picnic while listening to your favorite patriotic tunes.
