Building a Hospital in Your Head: A Spy Chat with UM Medical System’s Richie Stever

February 9, 2026 by The Spy Leave a Comment

There’s a particular kind of mind that can hold an entire building in its head at once. Richie Stever, Vice President of Real Estate and Construction at the University of Maryland Medical System, has that kind of brain. He can pull up any room in his mental Rolodex and walk through it before it exists, knowing exactly where the valve is two tiles to the left, how the geothermal system stores heat in the earth like a battery, and why this approach saves $1.2 million a year.

The new Shore Regional Medical Center is what Richie’s industry calls a megaproject: a 385,000-square-foot facility where technical innovation meets practical construction challenges. In our chat, Stever notes opportunities others might see as complications, whether it’s using the earth itself as an energy storage system or coordinating road work around Memorial Day beach traffic. It’s the kind of project that requires holding a thousand moving pieces in your mind simultaneously, from drilling wells to routing roundabouts, while never losing sight of what matters: building a hospital that works.

This video is approximately five minutes in length. For more information about the new Shore Regional Medical Center, please go here.
