Talbot Masters Swimming (aka the Manta Rays) is a United States Masters Swim Team that practices at the Easton Y.
Since 2004, the Manta Rays swim team has been open to all individuals age 18 and older. The team is geared toward all fitness levels, including multi-sport athletes and competitive swimmers.
The name “Masters” might sound intimidating, but in reality, it refers simply to the age group – adults above 18. For a first-person account of joining the Masters Swimming group, click here to read Kristina Henry’s story “The Rest Of Us” on the US Masters Swimming website about joining the team.
Several team members train for open water swims including the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim, the Eagleman, La Jolla Rough Water and other triathlons. Many compete in area masters swim meets and several swimmers qualify for and compete in national and international events.
Coaching is provided and includes stroke and turn technique and interval training.
Head Coach Mary Gibson qualified for the 1972 Olympic Trials. In 2010, she was inducted into the University of Connecticut Sports Hall of Fame. Mary coached summer league swimming for several years and the Upper Montgomery County Y Masters in the 1980s and later at the Curl Burke swim club, a USS swim team based in the Washington, DC area.
