Music, like art, evolves and is often reflective of the journey that the musician or artist has taken. Such was the case in the artwork recently selected by Chesapeake Chamber Music (CCM) for use as the poster image and theme for the 2013 Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival. The work of artist Barbara Parker of Worton, MD, was selected for its use of color and form in capturing water – an important element of life on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
According to Margaret Welch, CCM Board member who coordinated the contest to select the artwork for this year’s poster, “Barbara was able to capture, in a contemporary image, the creative energy of chamber music. This year’s image – a one-of-a-kind piece – is a departure from some of the more traditional artwork we have selected in past years and I think it will bring a fresh new approach to our promotional materials.”
Barbara Parker’s painting, Global Village #24, is part of a series of 100 paintings in acrylic on canvas done by Parker and entitled Global Village. Parker’s interest in global culture and her painting of the Global Village series were inspired by her experiences mentoring international students at Washington College, where she says an exchange of the creative process occurs each time she meets with students. She comments, “In a sense, the paintings are flags – proud, unique and at the same time unified.”
Parker, who was raised in the Seattle area and has lived in many areas of the country, holds a bachelor’s degree from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She moved to Chestertown in 1982 and lives on a farm in Worton. She is a member of River Arts in Chestertown, having recently received an Honorable Mention in their Winter Members Show 2012.
She adds, “Art lets the creative force that is inside of me come out, whether it is through my painting, poetry, songwriting, weaving, jewelry making or gardening. I surround myself with creative energy every day – it inspires my work.”
Parker’s artwork will be used on the Festival’s publicity materials, including the Festival poster, flyers, print and online advertising, event programs and the CCM website. In addition, the painting will be auctioned at the CCM Gala on March 2, 2013. The Chesapeake Chamber Music Festival will be held in various Mid-Shore locations from June 2 through June 16, 2013.
