Have you ever wondered where your beliefs came from or whether the ideas behind them were actually solid? Join Deacon Kathy Garrison and the Chesapeake Forum on Oct. 11th for a discussion of Debby Irving’s “Walking up White” to learn how the author took a hard look at the beliefs and notions behind her ideas about gender, race and more.
This course invites participants on a journey of self-discovery, understanding, and awakening based on Debby Irving’s groundbreaking book, “Waking Up White.” In the book, Irving shares her own transformation as she grapples with her preconceived notions and beliefs, shedding light on the history, systems, and language that perpetuate racism. She encourages readers to embark on their own journeys of introspection, challenging them to question their own experiences and biases.
Deacon Kathy Garrison will lead course participants through a series of engaging discussions, fostering an environment where self-exploration and dialogue can thrive. This unique course provides an opportunity for individuals to deepen their understanding of privilege, challenge their perspectives, and explore ways to contribute to positive change in our society. It is open to all who wish to engage in meaningful conversations about race and privilege.
This course is at the Easton Family YMCA (participants can choose to attend in person or via Zoom, but there will be no recording available). 3 sessions, every Wednesday from October 11th to October 25th, 2023, from 10-11:30pm. Registration for the “Waking Up White” course is now open. To reserve your seat, please visit www.ChesapeakeForum.org.
