The Commissioners of St. Michaels have given approval for an open competition to place sculpture along the Rails to Trails bike path. Up to four sculptures will be installed between Boundary Lane and W. Chew Ave. on May 1st. Professionals, amateurs, students, families, and clubs are invited to send submissions. Multiple entries are welcome.
Local author and retired real estate broker Ann Hymes conceived the idea and is sponsoring the competition and $500 prizes. “Special consideration will be given to proposals sensitive to the environment,” explains Hymes, “but we will be looking for work that is edgy, funky, creative, and delights the imagination. Let’s add some additional fun for walkers and bikers on our wonderful bike path.” The sculptures will be displayed on the trail for six months.
The three judges, all enthusiastic environmentalists and creative thinkers, are:
* Hymes, artist and writer who is passionate about sustainable communities and recycling, and has created and maintains a native plant garden for St. Michaels.
* Suzanne Pittenger-Slear, President and CEO of Environmental Concern, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to wetlands stewardship and enhancing native habitat.
* Sarah Abel, Planning and Zoning Officer for St. Michaels, who seeks opportunities to enhance the community with her background in architecture and urban planning.
All art work remains the property of the artists, unless donated to the town. Submissions may be rough sketches but must include information on materials, measurements, title of piece, and who is submitting the idea. Finalists may be interviewed to explain proposal details. Entries must be received by March 18, 2017. Send to: Ann Hymes, PO Box 367, St. Michaels, MD 21663, or [email protected]. Please contact her for more information.
