To support the Wellness Weekend surrounding the American Diabetes Association’s Tour de Cure Chesapeake Bay event in Easton on May 17, the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology will offer an Open House on Friday, May 16, 1:00-4:00 p.m.
According Doris Allen, RN, CDE, lead diabetes educator in the Center, the Open House is an opportunity to visit the Center, which is based in the Outpatient Wing of UM Shore Medical Center at Easton, and meet talk with staff regarding diabetes diagnosis, treatment and management as well as the services offered by the Center. Individuals with diabetes and their family members are encouraged to attend.
The event also will include brief discussions led by the Center’s diabetes educators, as follows: “Pre Diabetes,” at 2:00 p.m., led by Doris Allen, RN, CDE; “What about Carbs?,” at 2:20 p.m., Karen Hollis, RDN, CDE; and “Insulin delivery devices for Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics,” at 2:40 p.m., led by Renee Woodward, RN, CDE.
In addition to a full complement of physician services (including testing, diagnosis, consultation and medication management) provided by Kenneth Patrick Ligaray, MD, medical director, and Faustino Macuha, Jr., MD, the UM Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology provides a variety of support services to help patients maintain optimal health. These include Diabetes Self- Management Education; one-to-one counseling for diet, exercise and blood sugar management; and a monthly support group.
