Patrons are invited to a discussion on Native Bees which will be held Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 2 p.m. at the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library. The speaker will be Mike Embrey, an apiculturalist, from the University of Maryland Extension, Wye Research and Education Center.

This is the first of a new speaker series. The Monthly Speakers Series will take place the 1st Saturday of each month. Patrons are invited to come hear Mr. Embrey., whose extensive extracurricular work to educate schoolchildren and the public about beekeeping has earned him the Extraordinary Public Service Non-exempt award. Mr. Embrey has helped others develop a tour of visiting Bulgarian beekeepers to beekeepers in Maryland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina. He has worked with beekeepers in Turkmenistan, Russia, Bulgaria and Bangladesh, where beekeepers often make higher incomes than farmers.

Mr. Embrey also teaches a seven (7) week course titled Beekeeping 101 starting in January 2012 at the Wye Research and Education Center. This will be a great opportunity to learn how vital bees are to our ecosystem. Information will be available for those interested in learning how to become beekeepers.
