High tides to take place January 9 – 13
Maryland will experience higher than average tides January 9 through 13 and theCoastSmart Communities program is asking citizens to help document the tides by taking pictures of high water and flooding around their neighborhoods and submitting the photos here. These high tides give researchers a look at what future sea level rise may potentially look like.
The photographs will be used in educational and outreach materials to build awareness on how coastal flooding affects Maryland’s shoreline and infrastructure, as part of the State’s King Tide Initiative. CoastSmart will then use this information to create a plan for communities that may experience coastal hazards and increased flooding in the future.
Though these are not official King Tides ─ extremely high tides that occur twice a year when the sun, moon, and Earth align, like those experienced in December ─ they serve as a tremendous resource. The next actual King Tide will be the end of June 2013. An Environmental Protection Agency fact sheet on King Tides is available here.
Participants may submit and view images at https://www.flickr.com/groups/MarylandKingTides, and find out more about the Maryland King Tides Initiative, including times of tides, atdnr.state.md.us/coastsmart/king_tide.asp.
