Drive Forward: The Classic Motor Museum’s Capital Funding Campaign to Purchase 906 S. Talbot Street

September 4, 2024 by The Spy Desk

Share

The Classic Motor Museum of St. Michaels stands as a living testament to the rich history of automotive engineering and design. For years, it has attracted car lovers and curious minds alike, offering a glimpse into the past through its impressive collection of vintage automobiles. However, as the museum continues to grow, so does its need for space and resources. This need has inspired the museum to launch its latest capital funding drive, “Drive Forward,” with a goal of purchasing the property at 906 S. Talbot Street.

Preserving the Past, Nurturing the Future

At the core of the Classic Motor Museum’s mission is not just the preservation of automotive history but also the education and training of future automotive professionals. The museum’s vision extends beyond its current exhibition space. It dreams of a facility that supports the community, especially through its Automotive Technician Apprenticeship Program (ATAP), which provides hands-on training for young people who wish to pursue a career in the automotive industry. This program will provide essential education and hands-on training opportunities, benefiting not only our local community but also our veterans. ATAP has received approval from the Department of Veterans Affairs, allowing those who have served in the military to utilize their earned education benefits.  This initiative ensures that our veterans can gain valuable skill and certifications that will support their transition into successful post-service careers while also enriching the skilled labor force within our local community.

But the dream needs room to grow. The current museum space, while packed with historic gems, is not large enough to accommodate the expansion of its educational programs. By acquiring 906 S. Talbot Street, the museum will not only be able to expand its collection but will also gain the space necessary to take its ATAP initiative to new heights.

The Campaign: Drive Forward

The “Drive Forward” campaign is a bold step in ensuring the future of the Classic Motor Museum. The property at 906 S. Talbot Street offers an exciting opportunity to transform the museum into a premier hub for classic car enthusiasts and a hands-on training facility for aspiring automotive technicians.

Campaign Goals:

  1. Acquire 906 S. Talbot Street: Secure the property to allow for the museum’s expansion, giving it the capacity to house more classic cars and expand the museum’s exhibits and potentially offer classes or workshops to the public.
  2. Enhance Educational Opportunities: Grow the museum’s Automotive Technician Apprenticeship Program. This facility provides a space for more comprehensive educational offerings and hands-on experiences.
  3. Create a new gateway to St. Michaels: The property, located at the entrance to the town of St. Michaels, has been neglected for years. We will restore the property to look like a 1950’s style service station, similar to how it was originally constructed in 1959. (See artist’s rendering in this article.)

How You Can Help

This capital campaign is not just a chance for the museum to grow—it’s an opportunity for the community to be part of something transformative. The museum has laid out several ways in which supporters can get involved:

  • Donate: Every contribution counts. Whether big or small, your donation will help secure the future of both the museum and its educational programs. Your gift is tax-deductible, making it not only a meaningful contribution but a smart one.
  • Spread the Word: By sharing the Drive Forward campaign with your network of friends, family, and car enthusiasts, you can help rally support and raise awareness. Every share helps bring the museum closer to achieving its goals.
  • Volunteer: The museum is also calling on volunteers to offer their time and skills. Whether you have expertise in mechanics, marketing, construction or are just passionate about the museum’s mission, your involvement can help transform the property into a welcoming gateway to our charming town.
