The Talbot County Democratic Central Committee will host its third annual Douglass-Tubman Dinner on Saturday, May 18, at Easton’s Waterfowl Building, 40 S. Harrison St. Festivities will begin at 5 PM with a reception followed by dinner. For more information and to attend, go to talbotdems.org.
The featured honored guest and keynote speaker will be Congressman Elijah Cummings, Maryland’s 7th district Representative. Born and raised in Baltimore, this Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Howard University and graduate of Maryland School of Law has received 12 honorary doctorates from universities across our nation, and serves today as Chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee.
Gene Counihan, Talbot County Democratic Central Committee member who served with our speaker in the Maryland House of Delegates, will introduce Representative Cummings. Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party, will also be in attendance.
“Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman are two American trailblazers who have inspired us by their leadership,” says Scott Kane, central committee chair. “They shared a vision that strengthened our nation. We continue that work today.”
We may face challenges, but our Eastern Shore trailblazers inspire confidence. Talbot’s own Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in the early 1800s, but went on to become a renowned abolitionist, orator and statesman. Harriet Tubman of Dorchester spied for the U.S. Army during the Civil War, but is best known for leading people to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
Congressman Cummings not only puts a fair-minded face on the proceedings the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, he continues to remind us of our democratic mission to ensure that our children will have access to quality education and health care, clean air and water, and a future defined by accountability and fiscal responsibility.
In his closing remarks at a recent committee hearing he recalled, “The one meeting I had with the president, I said, ‘The greatest gift we can give our children is making sure we give them a democracy that is better than the one we came upon.’ “
Proceeds of the annual Talbot County Democratic Central Committee fundraiser are devoted solely to supporting a local Democratic headquarters and local candidates, and registering, educating and turning out voters. The central committee is the official governing body of the Democratic Party in Talbot County. Chosen by democratic voters during the gubernatorial primary election, the committee consists of ten members who carry out the local business of the Democratic Party. The Democratic Central Committee also fosters party-building activity in Talbot county, including candidate recruitment and Get Out the Vote in conjunction with the Democratic Forum and Talbot Democratic Women’s Club.
