The “Move the Monument Coalition” will hold an event, “Living Our Faith Against Injustice,” on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m. on the Talbot County courthouse grounds.
Local faith leaders will gather and speak to how their respective faith traditions call them to commit to working toward a more just and equitable future for all and the elimination of racism as a moral imperative, including removing the Confederate statue.
“That statue, standing as it now does, on the Court House grounds, suggests to all who see it that we, as a community, by its very presence, embrace the message it silently communicates,” said Rabbi Peter Hyman of Temple B’nai Israel in Easton, who will speak on Tuesday night. “That statue does not present anything I admire, desire or respect. For these reasons and more, it’s time to move the Talbot Boys statue.”
The rally is part of an ongoing commitment to gather on the nights the Talbot County Council meets to send the message that their 3-to-2 vote to leave the statue in place does not represent the sentiments of the majority of Talbot County’s citizens who will continue to push for its inevitable removal.
All are welcome to attend and asked to wear masks and socially distance.

Question for the Faith Leaders of our local “Move The Monument Coalition” — where the hell has your politically correct conscience been hiding all these many years? You mean to tell me that your collective disgust and ire regarding the Talbot Boys Civil War statue has been asleep in cozy hibernation — but that it took war cries from Black Lives Matter anarchists to suddenly “woke” you up from your long apathetic malaise? Methinks this very “convenient” activist urge to galvanize your base by means of purging Talbot County of what you construe to be an ignominious symbol of historical racism — wreaks of the sort of circus tactic notorious race baiter Al Sharpton so often deploys — whenever he sees an opportunity to profit from ancient racial hatreds.

Or people are learning and growing.

This is a disrespectful mischaracterization of our local faith community. Several of our community’s faith leaders, including Rabbi Hyman, gave public testimony in 2015 and 2017 to remove the Talbot Boys statue.

Just let the Talbot citizens vote on this issue!
So many of our citizens are just sick and tired of being talked down upon and told what this monument means and how they should think by those who believe they are morally superior.
The people who want to “cram down” their position upon the rest of our citizens don’t know the history and can care less about what the actual history was. They have no respect for viewpoints of others who understand the huge crisis our country faced during that time and that many within Maryland believed that our democracy had ceased and tyranny began.
These people have no respect for the democratic process and will not tolerate any viewpoints other than their own.
Now we have “Faith Based” leaders in an attempt to make this an issue of morality and to further the “cram down” notion of moral superiority.
Before these religious leaders get on their pulpit in a political arena, they need to first tell us why they haven’t protested and spoken out about all the pro-slavery teachings in the Good Book from which they preach. Will they be so hypocritical? Just a couple: Colossians 3:22, Ephesians 6:5, Peter 2:18
The bottom line is the overwhelming evidence reveals these men from Talbot were not motivated by or had any intention of fighting for slavery. They rose because of the gross oppression and Constitutional violations of their democracy and liberties.
Actual history however does not support the social agenda of the “cram downers” nor do these people care about truth, and they certainly don’t respect the democratic process.
Enough of the whining… this monument has been repeatedly voted on over the years. The council members wisely voted on “facts” and not the propaganda and they represented the majority of Talbot citizens.
Talbot citizens are really getting fed up with the pontifications of theses moral elite “Cram Downers” – Just let the citizens vote on it and move on!

Very well said Mr Callahan.
