A free public screening of the documentary Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics will be held Thursday, January 29, at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge.
The event is co-sponsored by Mayor Lajan Cephas Bey and the Lower Eastern Shore Group of the Maryland Sierra Club, and aims to raise awareness about the growing presence of microplastics in the environment and their potential impacts on human health.
Plastic People is a feature-length, 1 hour and 22 minute documentary that examines how microscopic plastic particles have become widespread in air, water, food, and even the human body. The film brings together scientists, medical experts, and researchers to explore emerging evidence linking microplastic exposure to a range of health concerns, while also examining how plastic pollution has become embedded in modern life.
Following the screening, a brief panel discussion and Q&A will offer attendees an opportunity to ask questions and learn about practical actions individuals and communities can take to reduce plastic pollution and exposure.
The event will take place in the Clipper Room at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay, located at 100 Heron Blvd., Cambridge. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the film beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.
Panelists in the Panel of Hope:
Dr. William Nardin, Associate Professor at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Horn Point Laboratory (UMCES–HPL)
Dr. Justine Walker, Assistant Professor, School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences (SANS), University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES)
