Habitat Choptank celebrated World Habitat Day on October 2nd with a build day and a block party in the Hill District in Easton. The affiliate also celebrated surpassing their $1 million tithe milestone.
In 1985, the United Nations established the first Monday in October as World Habitat Day to promote the importance of shelter. Habitat for Humanity affiliates worldwide celebrate World Habitat Day in recognition that everyone deserves a safe and affordable home. Habitat for Humanity staff, board members, volunteers, donors, and partners spend World Habitat Day on Habitat construction sites to build homes and to build a future where everyone has a safe and affordable place to live.
This year, Habitat Choptank board and staff members spent World Habitat Day by building on a Habitat construction site on South Locust Street, located in the Hill District in Easton and celebrating their $1 million tithe achievement to Habitat for Humanity. This historic neighborhood currently has 4 new Habitat houses under construction as well as a historic home rehabilitation in progress.
After spending the morning and afternoon on the construction site, Habitat Choptank hosted a block party in the neighborhood to celebrate World Habitat Day and to educate the diverse and bilingual community that resides in the Hill District about Habitat Choptank’s programs and services. The affiliate provided free food and drinks and information and was joined by other partner organizations. Pickering Creek offered information about native plants and hosted a giveaway of various plants, and the Multicultural Center provided information about their services.
While Habitat Choptank serves Talbot and Dorchester Counties in Maryland, the affiliate recognizes the global need for safe and affordable housing. Habitat Choptank commits to tithing 10% of all unrestricted donations received to support housing needs and other relief efforts worldwide. As part of Habitat for Humanity International’s Tithe Program, Habitat Choptank tithes to Habitat affiliates in Haiti, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
“Our commitment to tithing is based on Habitat Choptank’s Christian values,” says JoAnn Hansen, CEO of Habitat Choptank. “We have a strong belief that when we operate in faith and steward the resources that we’ve been entrusted with well, God will take care of the rest.”
