District I of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland, Inc. is proud to host a very special National Garden Clubs Holiday Standard Flower Show, “HALLOWEEN” on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the Oxford Community Center at 200 Oxford Road, Oxford MD. This flower show is free and open to the public from 1:30 – 5:00pm. The “Trick” is to save this date on your calendar because attending this Standard Flower Show will surely be a “Treat”!
An National Garden Clubs Standard Flower Show is the official title of a flower show that conforms to standards established by National Garden Clubs, Inc. The purpose of a flower show is to educate garden club members and the viewing public by stimulating interest in horticulture and floral design, provide outlets for creative expression, and communicate National Garden Club goals and objectives. This Holiday Standard Flower Show will utilize fun Halloween themes in all divisions with exhibits created by talented horticulturalists and floral designers. All exhibits are competitive and will be judged by National Garden Club Accredited Flower Show Judges using the Standard System of Awarding. Top scoring exhibits have the potential to receive special awards and ribbons.
This Standard Flower Show is open to all members District I Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland and National Garden Club, Inc.. Most classes are open to the public. The schedule can be reviewed and downloaded from the Oxford Garden Club website: www.oxfordmdgc.org, select: “District I Flower Show” to review other documents for exhibiting. At this time the Public is invited to exhibit horticulture as all other exhibiting sections have been filled.
District I of the Federated garden clubs of Maryland has 511 members in 11 garden clubs; Caroline County Garden Club, Chestertown Garden Club, Dorchester County Garden Club, Four Seasons Garden Club, Greenfingers Garden Club, Kent Island Garden Club, Oxford Garden Club, Queen Anne’s County Garden Club, Somerset County Garden Club, Talbot County Garden Club and Worcester County Garden Club. Every two years, a different District I garden club hosts this Standard Flower Show and Oxford Garden Club has the honor of hosting this event at the Oxford Community Center this year.
This show features four different Divisions; Horticulture, Design, Educational Exhibits and Botanical Arts with family friendly Halloween themes featuring horticulture suitable for local yards and gardens with autumn interest. The Horticulture Division will showcase ten different sections which will include cut evergreen trees and shrubs, cut fall flowering perennials, flowering annuals, foliage annuals, with special sections for collections, displays and combination plantings. A featured section is the special dwarf sunflower growing seed challenge for all District I garden club members. We will showcase 40 different floral designs from 8” miniatures to much larger designs, all with a fun and spooky Halloween themes, created by talented floral designers.The Botanical Arts Division this year will showcase Halloween themed artistic crafts using botanical materials, a photography exhibit and botanical horticulture.
As a perk, we are featuring two vendors; Hilary Bruns, a potter from Easton, Maryland featuring her beautiful creative pottery for modern floral designs. Floral Design accessories will also be sold from Bent and Twisted Studios.
