Why is it that the Kentucky Derby always seems to slip up on me unexpectedly ? It is always the first Saturday in May – shouldn’t it be listed on my DayMinder automatically, or my phone ? (Google, take note).
Twenty one horses are scheduled to run at Churchill Downs this Saturday, but I’ll bet you one or two of those will be scratched prior to the race. Each Derby Day at Andy’s we took the Baltimore Sun’s list of entrants, carefully cut them into strips, and mixed them up in a bucket. For a paltry sum, generally $3 to $5, customers and employees alike could pick a name out of the hat. Winner took the pot, but then he (she) was expected to buy the bar a round after the race, so in effect everyone won.
I’m plumping for I’ll Have Another to win the Derby this year. The name certainly is in keeping with the festive atmosphere; and while I’m not much of a bourbon drinker, I do love mint. The official Kentucky Derby website has him coming in third.
(And if you really don’t like bourbon, you could always opt for a mojito .)
