MidshoreRiverkeeper Conservancy (MRC) is pleased to announce that Keitasha Royal has joined our team as the 2016-17 Chesapeake Conservation Corps (CCC) Volunteer. CCC provides service-learning opportunities and green job training for young people through environmental and energy conservation projects. The program is supported by Chesapeake Bay Trust. Keitasha is the sixth CCC Volunteer to join MRC.
Originally from San Diego, California, Keitasha graduated in June from the University of California Santa Barbara with a B.S. in Hydrologic Sciences and Policy. She’s very interested in fluvial systems, especially rivers and streams and plans to continue with this study, focusing on river restoration and heavy metals contamination. During her time at UCSB, she was involved in several projects concerning fluvial systems and environmental restoration.
With Keitasha’s background and passion for stream restoration and environmental education, she is a perfect fit for MRC. She says, “I chose MRC because it gives me the best opportunity to engage with the community, promote environmental education, understand water quality, and learn about the Chesapeake watershed.”
MRC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the restoration and protection of the waterways that comprise the Choptank River watershed and its tributaries, the Miles and Wye Rivers, and Eastern Bay. The organization advocates for the health of these tributaries and the living resources they support. MRC now has ten full-time river advocates working at every level to preserve and protect Midshorerivers. The organization is supported by nearly 1,000 volunteers as well as by an engaged and caring community. MRC has attracted project grant funds of over one million dollars just in the past year to support pollution-reduction projects, a highly successful education program, and extensive advocacy work.
