Last evening I had the opportunity to see a really good basketball team play the St Michaels Lady Saints. The well-coached Kent Island Buccaneers came to St Michaels ready to play. It was obvious during the first quarter that it was going to be a long night for the Saints. The Lady Buccaneers initiated a full court press after the tip off and never let up. The Saints were unable to get any shots on basket during the first period as poor passing by the Saints and strong defense by the Buccaneers resulted in numerous turnovers. The score at the end of the first period was Kent Island 27 St Michaels 0.
The second period saw the Saints’ Alana Hall score a three point shot from the parking lot coupled with another basket from a teammate and the half time score was 51 to 5.
I believe everyone in the gymnasium was thankful for the slaughter rule which allows a running clock except for time outs and fouls when there is a 30 point difference in the score. The Buccaneers were able to substitute all five players numerous times during the game. St Michaels Coach Ken Popp was forced to balance his players with consideration for foul trouble and a limited bench. The Saints only suited up seven players. The Lady Saints continued to have trouble finding the basket and the third period score was 65 to 5.
The fourth quarter went by fast as the Lady Saints continued to have trouble with passing the ball, dribbling the ball and keeping the ball from the Buccaneers. One very bright spot on the Saints team is Alana Hall who was able to sink two free throws to add two points to the Saints score. The final score was Kent Island 79 St Michaels 7.
Next Tuesday, February 14, the Lady Saints will host Steven Decauter High School from down Ocean City way. Tuesday is the last home game for the Lady Saints this season and consequently is also Senior Night. The St Michaels Sports Boosters will acknowledge the contribution to the basketball team by the three graduating seniors. We hope to see you there.
