The Move the Monument Coalition applauds the removal of the Confederate monument from Talbot County’s courthouse lawn.
According to Talbot County, work to move the statue to Cross Keys Battlefield in Virginia will begin this Sunday, March 13, and the statue will be moved on Monday.
The coalition, which included thousands of Talbot County residents from all walks of life, has worked hard to peacefully call for the removal of the statue, raising more than $80,000 to fund its relocation.
We commend our many supporters as well as the County Council for seeing that this symbol of the Jim Crow-era no longer sits on the site where justice for all is supposed to reign.
The coalition, formed after the death of George Floyd, held numerous rallies and educational seminars on the history of the Civil War and the Jim Crow era on the Eastern Shore, in particular focusing on the role of Black soldiers fighting for the Union.
Our Juneteenth rally attracted many hundreds of peaceful participants, all of them calling for moving the statue off the courthouse lawn. The coalition raised all the money to fund removal of the statue, the last one on nonfederal property in the state of Maryland. No taxpayer funds were used.
Again, we thank all those who contributed to this effort and continue to embrace our hope for equity and peace among all residents.

The Move the Monument Committee provided the leadership needed to finally have the statue removed.
Well done, public citizens!

Interpretatio for the masses:
The coalition, which included thousands of [virtual-signaling fanatics] has worked hard to peacefully call for the removal of the statue [no matter that it is a harmless symbol of reconciliation and does nothing at all].
we commend our supporters . . . for seeing [what no sane person would have noticed or cared about].
The coalition, formed after the death of George Floyd [and expertly exploited by Kneeling Nancy] held numerous rallies and educational seminars [struggle sessions meant to isolate and demonize running dogs] on the history of the Civil War [which we now look forward to revive in perpetuity, Trumpsters!].
Again, we thank all those who contributed to this effort and continue to embrace our hope for equity [whatever that means at this point in time] and peace [or else] among all residents. [i.e., watch your step or you’ll be cancelled next, heh-heh].
Deirdre LaMotte says
Hahaha, some people need to move on in every way. Holding to a tired and offensive symbol is indicative
of a static and tragic life. Fear of being “cancelled”? Perhaps one is regressive and hostel. Who knows.

I imagine very few will notice it’s absence. For those who do, and are civil war buffs, I suggest a visit to the lavender farm, & winery less than 4 miles from Cross keys battlefield, it’s a pleasant spot to lift an elbow. Also not far from Massanutten, river tubing, caverns,& other fun & interesting things to do.

All the transplanted Libs who have moved to Talbot County clearly do not know and do not wish to know the history of the statue or the history of the county. I was born and raised in Talbot County as well as my parents and several generations of my family. You should be ashamed, but you cry and cry until you get your way as it is your way or no way at all. So the Frederick Douglas statue was put in place to appease all those who were offended by the Talbot Boys statue. So if one statue goes, they both need to go as this is County property correct?
Tom Alspach says
Don’t know your age Michele, but if you were “born and raised in Talbot County” through the ‘60s you had the “benefit” of going through the county schools without the horror of having black students in your classrooms. And your parents and “several generations” of your family enjoyed the same benefit apparently without objection. It required the efforts of those who “cry and cry” to finally compel Talbot to obey the law and integrate our schools, “all deliberate speed” having amounted to some fifteen years. The Talbot Boys were all that was left for those who resisted that result.
Michele Parker says
I did not go to the county schools for your information Tom & I do not have a racist bone in my body. I come from a long lineage of Quakers from Philadelphia as well as the Eastern Shore who helped many slaves seek safety.
Janet Sad;er says
I couldn’t agree more!
Jill Poe says
Oh how the quality of life has sifted in Talbot County. I hope everyone who does not miss the statue and really believes it represents the Jim Crow error, enjoys the development in Trappe as well as what is to come at Easton Point. All of the new shops and restaurants in Easton as well as the increase in taxes. The land on unpleasant living is all yours.
Eric Ploeg says
Well said. After finding Talbot as a tranquil, warm, considerate community, we moved here 20 years ago to flee now-urban Northern Virginia. As the constant gridlock and shrinking usable open space developed there , more and more residents were becoming meddlesome, intrusive and “woke”. Nowadays, its obvious that some of these people are migrating here with the belief that civic life in Talbot County will be better if they change it to how it is where they escaped from.
Paul Rybon says
Right, wrong, equitable, woke, all that aside, the real result here was that majority ruled.
Barbara Denton says
The majority did not rule. If it had gone to a vote for the whole County the statue would still be here. Thousands did not want its removal. The woke agenda caused this ruling not the people in Talbot County. One councilman turned his back on the will of the people (threats to his business) and illegally brought up another vote on the removal. He should be ashamed. Those of us who support the real history and want it taught with all its warts and bumps are the losers in this agenda. The Frederick Douglass statue was built on donations by all in Talbot County and was to offset having a statue to Confederate Soldiers on the Court House grounds. It is time to remove Frederick Douglass and consign him to DC on the grounds of his former home. You should read his biographies. He would never have wanted this statue removed to VA. Shame on all of you. You screamed and stomped and got your way like a bunch of little children. Educate yourselves and perhaps you will have one iota of an idea of the harm you have caused. George Floyd was a criminal. George Floyd killed himself with fentynal. BLM is a criminal organization which is now being prosecuted for fraud. Think about what you have done. Glorifying criminals and removing Talbot history. What a victory!

Well said!!!
