DEN, Md. – With little rain across the Eastern Shore parts of the peninsula are in moderate to severe drought-like conditions.
The scorching summer sun is crippling farmers and their crops. “You can irrigate and irrigate, but you need the natural rain to get the quality,” said Kevin Smith, owner of Eden Produce.
Smith says without the rain his crops are not growing right and it’s costing him business. But these drought-like conditions are not doom and gloom for everyone. Grapes are very tolerant in dry weather and local wineries say this is going to be a great year for wine. “Grapes just don’t require a lot of moisture and if they do need moisture, the roots tend to go deeper in the ground to seek that water,” said Tom Shelton, owner of Bordeleau Vineyards and Winery.
