Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley weighed in on how sequestration could impact the state’s security at the State of Homeland Security address in Washington on Tuesday.
“NSA Joint Cyber Command is located right in the heart of Maryland,” said O’Malley, who was recently appointed by President Barack Obama on Monday to co-chair of the Council of Governors. “There are thousands of Marylanders–well trained moms and dads who go to work everyday to help our nations secure herself in this new domain of cyberspace [space].”
The governor was just one of several people at the at the Brookings Institute where Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano laid out her plans for “Homeland Security 3.0.”
Napolitano said DHS is pursing a risk-based approach to threat assessment in areas like aviation, immigration, and cyber security. Cyber security is one of the department’s five core missions that would be heavily impacted by sequester cuts.
O’Malley announced last Tuesday that more than 130,000 Marylanders are employed in the cyber industry.
