The Maryland Humanities Council (MHC) enthusiastically welcomes Pete Lesher, appointed by Governor Martin O’Malley, to its dynamic volunteer Board of Directors.
Lesher is a highly accomplished humanist and civic leader. Pete Lesher is chief curator for the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, where he has served on the staff since 1991. In addition overseeing museum exhibits, programs, and the restoration boat yard, he is responsible for the museum’s collections – ranging from floating watercraft to sailmakers’ needles, photographs, manuscripts, and oral history archives. Lesher regularly lectures on maritime topics ranging from transportation and trade to resource use, recreation, and shipbuilding history. Outside of work, he is an elected member of the Easton Town Council, he is active in historic preservation as chairman of the St. Michaels Historic District Commission, and he is a sailor, taking particular pleasure in his role as jib tender on one of the Chesapeake Bay sailing log canoes, the 1882-built Island Bird.
In July MHC partnered with Lesher and his colleagues at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to host this summer’s Chautauqua program, with record-breaking Chautauqua crowds at the Museum, and in 2013 he participated in MHC’s Practicing Democracy civic dialogue project, “Let’s Be Shore” which engaged Eastern Shore residents in conversations about land use and water quality.
“I can’t wait to work with Pete on the Board and I am eager to deepen our connections on the Eastern Shore,” said Phoebe Stein, MHC Executive Director.

Henderson, Jr. (Chair), Baltimore City; Diedre Badejo, Baltimore City; Elizabeth Cannon (Vice Chair), Garrett County; Gordon Cooley, Frederick County; Rhonda Dallas*, Prince George’s County; Monique Dixon, Baltimore City; Albert Feldstein, Allegany County; Michael S.
