Thursday, December 4, 2014, 7:30PM, the MSO under Music Director, Julien Benichou will ring in the holiday season with its fabulous “Holiday Joy” concert at the Avalon Theatre in Easton. The musical evening in this intimate setting last year was magical bringing tears and cheers and a spontaneous standing ovation as the last note was played.
This season, Maestro Benichou and the orchestra have planned another memorable performance with two outstanding soloists, soprano Esther Jane Hardenbergh, and bass-baritone Kevin Short, who will be joined by the talented vocalists, soprano Mia Rojas and mezzo-soprano, Zaray Rodriguez all from the University of Miami, Frost School of Music. In solos and ensembles they will sing “White Christmas” and “I Wonder as I Wander” interspersed with orchestral pieces by Leroy Anderson, Tchaikovsky and Handel, and a rendition of the carol based on a Ukrainian Folksong, “Carol of the Bells,” ending with the much loved audience sing-a-long.
Praised for her artistry, musicianship and presence as a performer, Esther Jane Hardenbergh’s voice is described as “radiant.” From a debut at Carnegie Hall in 1999 as winner of the International Opera Singer Competition to the present she has become a highly respected interpreter of the recital repertoire.
An international star, American bass-baritone Kevin Short has been hailed for having
“one of the rare bass-baritones of such individual quality of depth and color that it transfixes the listener.” He has thrilled audiences around the globe in a wide range of repertoire, performing internationally with opera companies in leading roles. Most recently he completed a Russian tour with Vladimir Lande and the St. Petersburg State Symphony performing George Gershwin’s “American in Paris,” “Rhapsody in Blue” and “Porgy and Bess.”
