Mid-Shore Pro Bono has been named a beneficiary of the United Fund of Talbot County’s 2015-2016 campaign. Contributions to the annual drive will help provide civil legal services to low-income individuals in Talbot County.
Mid-Shore Pro Bono offers a wide variety of services to its clients, ranging from connecting them with attorneys who can represent them in legal proceedings to offering advice on how individuals can handle their own legal issues. Many of its programs specifically are tailored to keep civil legal matters from entering the court system.
Its newest program was initiated with seed funding from the United Fund of Talbot County, providing services to seniors who may be reluctant or unable to turn to anyone else for assistance. Mid-Shore Pro Bono now holds monthly Elder Law Clinics at the Talbot Senior Center, where individuals may get help in preparing legal documents, such as wills, powers of attorney and advance directives.
They also can get advice and assistance on other issues, including abuse and neglect, adult guardianship, senior-related homeowner and consumer concerns, Social Security and pensions, nursing homes and assisted living programs, and more.
For ten years, Mid-Shore Pro Bono has been helping people in Talbot County and throughout the Mid-Shore with their civil legal problems. It was founded as the first regional pro bono referral agency in Maryland and remains the only referral agency on the Eastern Shore. The scope of its program has evolved from simply a referral service—matching clients with attorneys willing to volunteer their time—into a multi-faceted community resource.
Mid-Shore Pro Bono programs now include general legal clinics as well as others focused on areas such as bankruptcy and foreclosure, along with options for settling disputes and reaching divorce and custody agreements without going to court. Some of its services require individuals to meet income guidelines, while others are available regardless of financial need.
“We could not have grown into the valuable resource we are today without the assistance of the United Fund of Talbot County,” said Mid-Shore Pro Bono Executive Director Sandy Brown. “Thanks to the community’s United Fund donations, we have been able to offer Talbot County’s low-income citizens the programs they need to better their lives. We are grateful for everyone’s continued support.”
Mid-Shore Pro Bono serves Kent, Queen Anne’s, Caroline, Talbot & Dorchester Counties. For more information or to make a donation, call Mid-Shore Pro Bono at 410-690-8128 or visit www.midshoreprobono.org.
