Mid-Shore Community Foundation announced a grant of $5,000 from the MSCF Founders Fund to the Good Samaritan Fund of Talbot to help persons facing eviction or electric cutoff, according to Buck Duncan, President of MSCF.
Rabbi Peter Hyman, spokesman for the Good Samaritan board of directors said the fund was created more than 30 years ago by the Talbot Association of Clergy and Laity. The fund now operates under the auspices of the MSCF as a tax exempt organization.
Donations such as this make it possible for the Good Samaritan Fund to help persons facing eviction or electric cutoff Hyman said.
Donations to the Good Samaritan Fund go directly to utility companies and landlords.
The presentation was made at a reception for community non-profit organizations held by MSCF last week in the Presidential Board Room of Chesapeake College.
MSCF board member Alice Ryan, chair of the Grants Committee addressed the organizations, recapping the grant process and application deadlines. The spring 2016 MSCF grants cycle ends April 1, 2016.
On hand for the presentation were Good Samaritan Fund Board members Rose Potter and Dr. Walid M. Kamsheh, and fund administrators Bill Ball and Walt Johnson.
The volunteer organization verifies all information on prospective clients before any funds are approved, according to Johnson, with checks going directly to the landlord or utility company.
Volunteers working from a ‘virtual office’ take calls Monday thru Friday, and voice mail records calls weekends and after hours.
The fund has a working relationship with other organizations and agencies within area communities, including St. Vincent dePaul Society, Easton Utilities, Choptank Electric, Delmarva Power and Light, Neighborhood Service Center, Talbot County Health Department, and the Department of Social Services and many, many landlords. This makes it possible to coordinate assistance for applicants to maximize resources.
