On Sunday, October 16th, Nancy Hammond Editions, a gallery and shop, will release the annual limited editions Chesapeake poster 2012.
Designed by Nancy Hammond for the ninth year, the eagerly awaited poster is a signed and numbered lithograph. Each annual poster celebrates a different aspect of the Chesapeake Bay in a different style.
Last year, as in the past, many patrons camp out overnight outside of the gallery for a chance to buy one of the first 100 posters which sell for $45.00 each. Limited to two per customer, the price quickly rises after the first 100 are sold. The last poster in the limited edition of 500 sells for $3,000.00.
Just 3 days before the poster’s date of release, newspaper ads appear showing the poster’s image for the 1st time. Simultaneously, at Nancy Hammond Editions in Centreville, a large banner with the new 2012 poster image is unfurled.
When Nancy Hammond started creating the annual limited-signed posters with her fresh approach to Chesapeake Themes, patrons began collecting and, thus, a phenomenon was born.
Nancy Hammond Editions is a gallery and store which sells only Hammond’s art work and custom designed goods from ties to Christmas Cards.
The tradition continues at the gallery’s new Centreville location, just one block past the courthouse square, on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake.
Last year’s patrons came prepared. Puffy comforters, lawn chairs, dogs, picnic baskets and even a pup tent were evident. One customer told of an early morning relay race; another spotted a raccoon. This is a country version of the line that used to form in the historic district of Annapolis outside Hammond’s old gallery on State Circle.
When morning breaks, a full selection of homemade breads and jams, by Christina’s Catering, will be offered. Hot coffee will be delivered fresh, on the half hour for these devoted patrons.
And yes, there will be a Port-A-Potty!
