Talbot Interfaith Shelter’s (TIS) S4 Program – Shelter, Stability, Support, Success – is designed to guide families and individuals from homelessness to self-sufficiency. On October 21st, the community is invited to help these neighbors overcome the obstacle of homelessness at the inaugural Shelter Showdown & Hoedown.
The Showdown “goes down” at Tardigrade Obstacle Course and Fitness Facility in Cordova, where participants will get the chance to prove that they are “TIS tough.” Families and children can join the non-competitive Family Fun Waves from 12 to 2 p.m. Registration for this wave is $25 for adults, $15 for children over 5, and free for children under 5.
The Competitive Waves begin at 3 p.m. Participants can compete solo or in teams and can sign up to raise additional funds in support of TIS’ mission. Registration for the Competitive Waves is $40 per person.
The competition is already heating up… The Talbot County Sherriff’s Department will be putting a team together to compete and has laid down the challenge for all other local first responders to do the same.
Sheriff Gamble shares his excitement for this new local event, saying, “Talbot Interfaith Shelter is such an important part of our community, and the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office is excited to join them for this fantastic new event. We look forward to meeting our fellow local first responders on the Shelter Showdown starting line… Although, we fully expect to be waiting for them at the finish! In all seriousness, I hope to see our whole community out on October 21st having fun together while supporting TIS and its vital mission.”
All Showdown registrations include admission to the Hoedown, which takes place next door to Tardigrade at Triple Creek Winery from 1 to 6 p.m. The Hoedown celebration is open to the whole community! Admission for non-Showdown attendees is $10 per person, with children under 12 entering for free.
Join in the fun for food, beer, wine, and entertainment for the whole family! Kids will have a blast on the giant inflatable play course, along with other games and a craft corner. For the big kids, there will be adult axe throwing and archery games. Everyone will enjoy live music by local favorite Justin Ryan from 2 to 5 p.m.!
Showdown registration and Hoedown tickets are available at talbotinterfaithshelter.org/showdown.
“We are incredibly excited about this brand new event,” says TIS Executive Director Julie Lowe. “To us, the Shelter Showdown, in particular, is really meaningful because it is a physical representation of what our guests learn every day in our program – that our community is always cheering them on and that courage, confidence, and perseverance will help them to overcome any challenges life puts in their way.”
Inflation has increased the cost of assisting our neighbors in need, pushing TIS’ operating budget to $1.3 million for the first time ever. Proceeds from the Shelter Showdown & Hoedown, presented by Sun Management Rising Technologies, support Talbot Interfaith Shelter’s mission to provide Shelter, Stability, Support, and a path to Success for local families and individuals in need. Attending this unique community event will help men, women, and children receive shelter, case management, and life skills training. TIS also offers transitional housing, allowing qualifying guests to work gradually towards full financial independence.
