The Oxford Community Center announces several early winter programs, classes, and events in 2015.
Drawing and Painting with Deborah Scales begins on Monday, January 12, 2015, from 9:30-11:30 am. An experienced artist and art educator, Deborah has taught and exhibited her work in several states and countries. Her mixed media class at OCC is suitable for all levels of skill and experience; the format includes group discussion and one-on-one coaching. The class runs weekly for 8 sessions; fee $120, supplies additional. Registration is open.
Yoga Basics for Beginners with Suzie Hurley will focus on the important basic principles of alignment. This class, which runs on Saturday, January 10, and Saturday, January 17, from 9:30-11 am, is for both beginning students and for those students who wish to know more about alignment based yoga. Bring a sticky mat, a belt and a block. Drop-in fee $18/class.
Conversational Spanish with Jane Cross resumes on Tuesday, January 12, from 10-11 am. Geared for those with a range of existing language skills, this popular class will shift to a flexible “drop in” format for six weeks at $15/class, including materials.
A Day of Service in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Monday, January 19, 2015. The Oxford Community Center will sponsor a group of community volunteers willing to give a day or a half day of service working with Habitat for Humanity on a variety of projects. How US Newspapers Covered the War of 1812 with Steven Goldman, Thursday, January 22, 10:30-noon. This presentation will use images of rare early American newspapers to follow the radical changes in newspaper appearance and covered during the War of 1812. A Genealogy Workshop co-sponsored by OCC and the Oxford Museum is scheduled for Saturday, January 24, from 10 am-3 pm at OCC. This full-day workshop offers options, including Introduction to Genealogy and Advanced Research Techniques with Sue Brenchley, Strategies for Researching African American Ancestors Before 1870 with Aaron Dorsey, and Researching Eastern Shore and Tidewater Families with Teresa Neild. $10 per session, $20 full program. Two concurrent sessions in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. Participants may bring a brown bag lunch or purchase a box lunch for $10. Advance registration required by January 17. The Tred Avon Players open their 2015 season at OCC with Night Watch, an ingeniously devised thriller by Oxford’s own Lucille Fletcher.
