On Palm Sunday, April 13, the Christ Church Choir will perform John Stainer’s masterwork, “The Crucifixion” at 4:00 p.m. The choir will be joined by Thomas Beard, bass, a member of the Washington National Opera.
Mr. Beard has performed for numerous dignitaries, including U.S. Senators, Governors and Ambassadors. He was also invited to perform as special guest soloist by former First Lady Laura Bush at an invitation only event at the White House.
Russell Gartner, new to the Easton music scene, will also perform as tenor soloist. Mr. Gartner is a vocal instructor and performs oratorio in the Baltimore area.
The performance will be accompanied by organist Kevin Chamberlain, Dean of the Southern Delaware Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, and the performance will be directed by Music Director, Wes Lockfaw.
Modeled on the great passion settings of J.S. Bach, Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” is among the most popular of English choral works vividly portraying the events of the Passion of Christ. Premiered on February 24, 1887 and dedicated to the choir of Marylebone Church, the work combines recitatives, solos, and masterful choruses that range from the graphic mob shouts of Crucify Him to the ethereally beautiful meditation at the work’s centerpiece God So Loved the World.
