Talbot County Parks and Recreation is excited to announce the opening of the new gymnasium at the Talbot County Community Center. A ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the facility will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 at 6 p.m., at 10028 Ocean Gateway in Easton
During the event, visitors will be able to tour the gym and learn about the rental and event opportunities that will be available. Visitors are encouraged to bring their sneakers, as the courts will be open for basketball and pickleball. There will also be a raffle for limited edition Parks and Recreation gift baskets that include custom pickleball paddles.
Parks and Recreation Director Preston Peper and members of the Talbot County Council will be among the officials attending the event and will speak about the expansion project. Light refreshments will be served following the ribbon cutting.
“There has been a need in Talbot County for a large open space for sports, tournaments, events and meetings for many years,” said Director Peper. “This expansion will allow youth sports to grow, tournaments and competitions to be held, and will provide the capability to hold large events like banquets, weddings, job fairs and college fairs.”
With the new space, Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball, club volleyball and local businesses will have the ability to remain in Talbot County, and not have to travel outside the county to meet their space needs.
The addition will also allow for year-round use of the ice rink, allowing local hockey and skating teams to extend their season and practice times.
“We were excited to see how fast this project moved along; it feels like just yesterday that we were celebrating the groundbreaking” said Council President Chuck Callahan. “The new space is a great addition to our county, and we are excited to see what groups are attracted to using the new space.”
The project’s construction began in March 2023. The space includes two full-size high school basketball courts, restrooms, and additional storage space. Davis, Bowen & Friedel completed the architectural design work and the construction bid was awarded to Willow Construction, LLC of Easton. The project was funded by the County, and Program Open Space.
