Local businesses and individuals are helping the Crossroads Community Flying Pig ready its wings for the third annual Defying the Odds Flying Pig Roast on Saturday, May 18, beginning at 4 p.m. The event benefits Crossroads Community Foundation’s nonprofit program of mental health recovery resources for a five-county Mid-Shore region.
Tickets are $55 per person or $100 per couple. Proceeds target specific services, such as dental or eye care, where clients’ resources are severely limited or nonexistent.
The event continues to grow in popularity and support, with even more supporters welcoming the opportunity to contribute to an organization making a difference in the lives of residents often overlooked within their communities. Organizers report significant early donations for this year’s pig roast and are expecting the pig’s third flight to build upon the success of the first two events.
The Flying Pig Roast is a garden party taking place on the waterfront grounds of Lea Brooks’ Piney Point Farm outside Centreville. Fundraising Chair Karen Baer expressed her gratitude to Brooks for offering the use of her home for the event again this year. “Lea is well known for her generous support to the Queen Anne’s County community,” said Baer, noting that Brooks is a former Crossroads Community staff and board member, who remains committed to its mission.
The tented event features music, a buffet pig roast with all the trimmings, silent and live auctions, and “Pig Pens”—grab-bag opportunities to take home mystery gifts.
The Chris Sacks Band is donating the entertainment. Not only is Sacks supporting the event with his music at the party, but also is offering guests a future performance as an auction item. Sacks provides music therapy at the Queen Anne’s Recovery Club and hopes to have an individual or two participate with the band at the pig roast.
More high-end auction items also are coming in, reports Baer. Volunteers are working to put together a vacation package to accompany four donated Disney tickets. Paula Warner, owner of Paula’s Fine Jewelry in Chester, is contributing a delicate blue sapphire and diamond necklace.
Early sponsors include “Top Hogs” Chester River Health System and CNB; “Fine Swine” Service Today, Triton Wealth Management and What’s Up? Media; and “Pink Piglet” sponsors C. Albert Matthews, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, Peoples Bank of Kent County, and T.R. Klein and Company.
Baer thanked all of the early donors and sponsors for getting this year’s Flying Pig Roast off the ground and underway. “For the first two years, we were working to establish this event as Crossroads Community’s signature fundraising effort,” she said. “Now it’s time to get this pig really flying. It is wonderful to see the early enthusiastic support and we welcome everyone’s participation, whether as sponsor, donor or guest.”
