Make plans now to attend a memorable event on October 9, 2011, at Wye House Farm in Talbot County, the Eastern Shore’s only individual National Historic Landmark. The property is being made available for the party through the courtesy of Mrs. R.
Carmichael Tilghman and Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. Tilghman. Tours will be offered during the event.
This beautiful Georgian conservatory, approximately 21′ x 13′, constructed of glass and mahogany by Tanglewood Conservatories of Denton is among the items featured in the auction to benefit the Eastern Shore Field Office at Celebrate our Eastern Shore Heritage, set for Sunday, October 9 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m at historic Wye House Farm near Easton. The original 2003 purchase price was $125,000. Relocation of the original owners interrupted its construction, and the unfinished conservatory was placed in storage. It must be assembled in the selected location. Its current value is $50,000 to $75,000 according to the builder. The minimum bid is $40,000.
Sales and signings of books about the Eastern Shore will be available as well. A silent auction, representing the best of each county, will be conducted. Items offered include: Goose hunting on the Sassafras River, works by artists Nancy Hammond and John Barber, overnight accommodations and meals in historic inns and homes, custom-built Tanglewood conservatory, Smith Island cruise and cake baking lesson, genealogical research, and an historic venue for a special occasion.
In addition to the auction there will be
■ Oysters and Barbecue
■ Smith Island Cake
■ Eastern Shore Wine and Beer
■ Music by The Shoremen
The occasion celebrates the accomplishments of Preservation Maryland’s Eastern Shore field office, and proceeds from the event will go toward its continued operation.
