The St Michaels Saints basketball team hosted the Bulldogs from North Caroline High School in a three game meet on Tuesday night.
The Girls varsity team played a better game than the score would indicate but fell to the Bulldogs 48 to 12. The next home game for the Lady Saints is Thursday January 9th against Kent Island.
The Boys varsity team played a great first half with a one point spread at the mid-game buzzer. The Bulldogs were ahead 25 to 24 after a strong performance by the Saints starting lineup assisted by liberal substitutions from the bench.
Unfortunately the Bulldogs hit the floor running after the half time break and immediately scored ten unanswered points. This point surge proved to be too much for the Saints to overcome and the final score was North Caroline 79, St Michaels 57.
The highlight of the evening was the boys Junior Varsity game. The Bulldogs were ahead by five points at half time after a feisty St Michaels team managed to keep the game close with strong defense and a good eye on the basket. Coach John Palmer made sure everybody on the team got a chance to show their basketball talents and the young Saints team held their own against a good North Caroline squad.
At the three minute mark in the forth quarter it was a one point game. A three point toss by freshman Rakeem Beck tied the game at 43 with two minutes left on the clock. A foul shot by John Vincent Lewis put the Saints ahead by one point with under a minute and a half left in the game. Electricity filled the air in the St Michaels Gymnasium as the Saints were actually close to winning the game, a goal that had escaped the team all season. Unfortunately, once again, it was not to be. The final score was North Caroline 48 St Michaels 46. The St Michaels fans gave the Boys Junior Varsity Team a standing ovation as the final buzzer sounded before the team could get off a winning shot. It was great to hear the applause, the cheers, as the team left the court exhausted but with their heads held high.
The next home game for the Saints boys’ basketball team is this Thursday February 2nd verses North Dorchester. See you there.
