Habitat for Humanity Choptank is pleased to present a benefit performance by The Capitol Steps, a Washington DC-based political comedy troupe that began as a group of Senate staffers. The show will take place at 7p.m. on April 5, 2014 at the historic Avalon Theatre in Easton and is based on songs from their current albums, including “Fiscal Shades of Gray.” Proceeds from the performance will benefit Habitat for Humanity Choptank’s affordable home ownership program.
The Capitol Steps have been a Washington, DC institution for over thirty years, providing a unique blend of musical and political comedy. Each show consists of tasteful lampooning guaranteed to leave both sides of the political spectrum laughing. The troupe started in 1981, when John McCain was only 63 years old! Since then, they have appeared on “The Today Show,” “Nightline,” “CBS Evening News” and for many years in specials for National Public Radio.
Their show is constantly changing, strenuously bi-partisan, and includes songs about everything in the news, such as “Putin on a Blitz,” “You Can’t Hide This Biden Guy,” and “Greece! The Musical.”
General admission tickets are available for $60 per person. Tickets for the show with reserved seating and the pre-show cocktail reception are $100 per person. A portion of the ticket price is tax deductible. Sponsorship opportunities are still available and include admission to the reception and reserved seating at the show.
Since 1992, Habitat Choptank has empowered 62 low-income families from Talbot and Dorchester counties to build a better future for themselves through home ownership. Each family contributed 300-400 hours of “sweat equity” in the building of those houses and purchased their home with a 20 to 30-year Habitat mortgage. Currently, four families are working through Habitat’s multi-step partnership program toward the goal of becoming successful home buyers.
