During September, 2012, the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office investigated 53 crimes, of which 22 were crimes reported to the FBI. Those reportable crimes consisted of 11 thefts, 8 commercial/residential breaking and enterings, 2 assaults, and 1 stolen motor vehicle; all of which qualified as serious reportable offenses under this category. Other non-FBI reportable crimes consisted of 7 destruction of property cases, and 9 narcotics offenses. There were three death investigations during the month and one attempted suicide. During the investigation of all crimes, property valued at $113,364 was stolen, and items totaling $25,500 were recovered through investigation.
85 persons were arrested for a wide range of crimes, with 6 for theft, 8 for assault, 9 narcotics arrests, and 1 for breaking and entering. The balance of the arrests were scattered among other crimes; to include 1 for arson, 1 for fraud, 1 for a sex offense, and 1 arrest for a weapons violation. 6 juveniles were part of the total arrests; 1 for theft and the remaining 5 for narcotics violations. The remainder of the total arrests were for other minor crimes. During September, 60 active arrest warrants were received and entered into a nationwide database. Of those, Deputies arrested persons on 35 warrants and filed 1 detainer for a person already incarcerated. 2 of the warrants were later recalled by the court. 1 extradition was conducted during the month, costing $2,078.24, and consuming 56 duty hours. In this extradition, a person was returned from Tennessee to face charges of sexually abusing a minor and other related sex offense charges. This person was subsequently jailed on a $100,000 cash bond.
Deputies patrolled 25,235 miles in the county, and initiated traffic safety activities that resulted in 555 traffic stops of which 288 resulted in citations. There were 9 DUI arrests during September; 1 of which was accident involved. Three of these DUI arrests involved persons driving at speeds greater than 80 MPH. There were a total of 7 reported traffic accidents; all of which qualified for formal investigation, with charges being placed in five cases. Three of these cases involved hit and run. Two of the reportable accidents involved injury. There were 1,111 citizen calls for police services during September. Deputies investigated 35 alarm calls; all of which were false. Through the course of the month, Deputies participated in 15 community events.
During courthouse security operations, Deputies screened 2,599 persons who appeared for business in the courthouse complex. They further examined and screened 38 packages and all US mail items delivered to court offices. No weapons or items of contraband were discovered in this process. During court trials, 98 hours of court room security were provided. The Court Security Team also conducted 7 bank escorts, and served 1 domestic involved protective order, and 7 court summonses.
Deputies certified as Federal Motor Carrier commercial vehicle inspectors performed 34 commercial vehicle stops; with inspectors searching for commercial driver license and vehicle safety issues. 15 violations were noted during these inspections. 8 citations were issued for a range of violations; with fines totaling $815.
2 civil citations were issued during September; both for alcohol offenses. 7 evictions were processed for service, though only 3 were conducted. There were 42 formal contacts with registered sex offenders in Talbot County. All offenders were found to be in compliance. 5 offenders are currently listed as homeless. During September, 4 persons were identified and taken for emergency mental health evaluations through their contact with Deputies. During the previous 120 days, a total of 21 people have been screened for emergency mental health evaluations through police contact and intervention. During September, Deputies interceded in 2 reported domestic incidents. 9 Peace Orders and 7 Protective Orders were issued during the month, with Deputies involved in the service of 9 variations of initial, interim, and final Order service during this period.
