While the 2016 election was of intense interest to many on the Mid-Shore, it is safe to say that very few people have had more interest than former U.S. Congressman Christopher Shays in St. Michaels.
A moderate member of the GOP, Shays represented the affluent suburbs of Connecticut, as well as challenging urban centers like Bridgeport. And during his 20 plus years in the House, he developed a reputation for bipartisan reform and policies.
Nonetheless, he was defeated by a Democrat in 2008, and in 2013, Chris Shays decided to move to St. Michaels with his wife Betsi to enjoy a different life on the Eastern Shore.
Shays has frequently been seen on cable news networks during the election since his decision not to endorse his party’s nominee in favor Hillary Clinton. With that kind of independent voice, the former congressman has become an astute observer of both candidates.
In our short Spy Moment with the former congressman, he talks candidly about the candidates and Trump’s remarkable skill in connecting with America’s mostly white voters who have felt that the American dream has passed them by.

I have always had enormous respect for Congresmam Shays as a moderate Republican. He was a long-time, hard working BIPARTISAN member of the House. He worked hard and was willing to compromise for the greater good. He is a model of the elected official we need now. I cannot disagree with what he says in this interview and understand completely. But I find myself disappointed that someone I admire did not offer thoughts/guidance for the future. Trump is our president and no amount of hand wringing demonstrations, or worse will change that. We each to to find our way to go forward because go we must. And I for one would welcome Congressman Shays’ thoughts. Maybe they were just edited out of the Spy’/ film clip!

Thanks Christine for your comment.
For the record the Spy did have a much lengthier conversation with Congressman Shays, but unfortunately we experienced a mic failure in midcourse. I can assure you that Representative Shays discussed the importance of respecting the office the presidency and supporting President-elect Trump.
Our hope is that when he returns from a planned trip to Africa, we will be able to find the time to continue our conversation. In the meantime, I am sorry for this “operator error.”

I agree with Christine, we truly need to hear from leaders like Chris Shays, I was a constituent of his for many years and can verify that he is all you say he is. Please try to search him out and continue the conversation. BH
