Spy Moment: The Amazing Model Boats of Ed Theiler

October 29, 2018 by The Spy

Share

In a few weeks, the 2018 Model Boat Show will be held at the Oxford Community Center in conjunction with Waterfowl and the Oxford Firehouse Antiques Fair.

For the uninitiated, this is a sight to behold. Over forty nationally known boat modelers/ship artists from the Delmarva Peninsula and beyond are expected on-site displaying a wide range from Chesapeake-style crafts such as skiffs, sailboats, crab and oyster boats, historical ships, motor boats, and much more.

And while the Spy has not seen the work of most of these exceptional artists, it’s not hard to admire the marevollus gifts of one the country’s best model boat builders, and one who has become the heart and soul of this event, Talbot County’s own Ed Theiler.

A surgeon by training, Ed found a way to use his highly-skilled dexterity over the last few decades in creating meticulous reproductions of some of the most magnificent ships ever built. And as a result, his work can now be found in display at such venues as the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s headquarters in Annapolis.

The Spy was invited into Ed’s home a month ago to see some of his boats as a preview for what promises to be a remarkable exhibition for all to enjoy.

This video is approximately two minutes in length. The 2018 Model Boat Show will he held on Saturday, November 10th at the Oxford Community Center in conjunction with Waterfowl and the Oxford Firehouse Antiques Fair.
