St. Michael’s “1812 Profiles in Patriotism”

October 9, 2013 by Spy Desk

We won the Battle of St. Michaels on August 10th and 26th and celebrated 200 years of history with an outstanding weekend in St. Michaels.  Now come to the Saint Michaels Museum and see some of the Patriots come to life; get a glimpse of sense of what these people were like 200 years ago.  The “1812 Profiles in Patriotism” will present monologues of four people who played significant roles in local and national events.  The monologues will be performed by the Gallagher Gang of Hugh Gregory Gallagher Motivational Theater and directed by Ed Langrel.

Two monologues will be performed each Saturday beginning at 5 p.m. and lasting about one hour.  The characters will rotate throughout the series from October 12th through November 9th.  The St. Michaels Museum at Saint Mary’s Square will be open prior to the performances for visitors and features an 1812 exhibit.

The “1812 Profiles of Patriotism” monologues were written by local playwrights Carlton Spitzer and Peter Howell. They  include:  ” The War Just Made Things Worse”,  written by Carlton Spitzer,  which describes a young African American woman’s  (and many enslaved people’s) quest for freedom, performed by Audrey Roberts; “General Perry Benson” by Peter Howell , portrays  the Commander of the Maryland line, performed by Zach Schlag ; “Can’t You Take Joke?” by Carlton Spitzer, featuring Bruce Grove as Jacob Gibson, a St. Michaels landowner who plays a  joke on the local people; and finally, “James Madison”, written By Peter Howell and Carlton Spitzer,  to be performed by  John Swann.    The October 12th performance will be dedicated, in Memorial, to Carlton Spitzer.

The “1812 Profiles in Patriotism” will be performed at the St. Michaels Museum at St. Mary’s Square at 5 p.m. (weather permitting) and Union United Methodist Church, Freemont and Railroad Avenue, if weather is poor.  The “1812 Profiles of Patriotism” is underwritten by the Maryland Humanities Council.  The “1812 Profiles of Patriotism” monologues are offered for free and seating is provided, however, patrons may bring chairs or blankets for the performances.  For more information, call St. Mary’s Museum at 410-745-9561 or visit www.mmmotivationaltheater.com .
